Grooveshark

Does anybody remember Napster? That was one of the greatest times in American history until misguided artists and bands jumped on the copyright bandwagon. I myself downloaded a decent amount of albums, mainly the entire library from AFI, and that was on oldschool AOL dialup.

We’re about 10 or so years past that and have some killer services like Pandora and Last.fm. I personally love those sites, but I really dislike how they dont let you chose some of the songs you want to hear. Its kinda frustrating when you have a song stuck in your head that you want to get rid of, but the only way to rid it would be to listen to it about 18 times in a row. That’s where Grooveshark steps in.

I learned about grooveshark a few years ago from a friend I frequently attend concerts with. you can pick and choose your own playlists and listen to them without getting any random songs that you prefer not to hear. I think they might have some limitations. I just looked up Korn and they didnt have all of their albums, but they did for Wicked Wisdom, sevendust, Static-x and Devildriver. I guess it depends on the record label of the band you are looking for.

The only downside, obviously, is you can’t download any of the tracks so you can load em up on your iPod unless you buy them and there is no IOS or Android app version. There does seem to be a mobile browser version for your mobile device here.

Does anybody have other suggestions for online music streaming?

Map of Metal

I am one of those people who loves to learn interesting facts that are absolutely useless. When I listen to great music, I always wonder the influences that a band uses to create their unique sound. Incredibly, only a hundred years ago music was drastically different than it was today, and then 100 years before that it was even more different.

I found a great map of the current scope of sub-genres in the metal music industry called The Map of Metal. on each style is a blurb that talks about how that genre is defined and its characteristics and its origins. right next to that is a list of albums that epitomizes that sub genre. When you click on one of the albums, a window on the right plays a YouTube video that contains the audio for some of the tracks on that record.

It’s a very useful page if you are looking to listen something specifically.

Did any of you find any of your favorite bands on there?

Golden Gods

The time of year has come once again. It’s time for the Revolver Golden Gods Awards.I watched the recap on VH1 the last few years and it is a very interesting event to watch. Not only is there the usual glam that comes with awards shows, but you get all of the personalities that are very supressed, unless you count Lady Gaga or Sasha Baron Cohen.I’m not really too sure what to expect from this show.

After looking at some of the lists of nominations, I really wonder who picks them. For example, Jonathan Davis and Amy Lee being nominated for best vocalist. Those two couldnt be any less relevant in this day and age. I understand there are an endless number of bands, but they have at least four bands that were nominated for at least four different awards. If this is a showcase on the genre, they aren’t doing a great job at showcasing. I guess they are all of the mainstream bands.

The real award I am looking forward to is the most Metal Athlete, which I am pulling for a CM Punk Victory. I would like to hear a much more publicized pipe bomb from him. Kind of Ironic that Punk is in that nomination instead of Jericho, who is a member of his own metal band Fozzy.

Check out the Revolver Golden Gods Awards at Nokia Live on April 11, 2012, and later on this year on VH1.

Metal Tonite site returns from beyond

After a whole year with no real updates, and four months since I’ve posted a semi update (mainly for the concert calendar and album releases) , Metal Tonite is back. While the podcast is still in limbo, I will be starting my first post tomorrow with the weekly album releases followed by a little commentary later on this week on current events in the music industry.

The concert calendar as of this morning is up to date with shows from the more popular and/or well known venues in Orange County, LA County, Inland Empire, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Thanks
